Parent and Child Problems

By admin On July 5, 2010 No Comments

How hard is it to be a parent?  In one sense it is quite easy, but when it comes down to helping and advising your children it can be very difficult.

Parents always think they know best and that is part of the problem, we don’t.

Yes we have been through those difficult years so of course we know better than our children, but what we must remember is that times change and what was right for us may not be right for our children.

I have been rebuked so many times by being reminded that “Its different now” or “Mom that was years ago” and it seems the children are always right in that sense.

We try to guide our children by reliving our own childhood or teen years and the crutch of the matter is we have not moved forward to what is happening in the present time.

Children are growing up much faster and at the age of ten or eleven they are almost like young adults.  Your child will revolt about going to school in common or garden school shoes, they must have designer gear like other kids so as not to feel inferior.

You might rage about the cost, but try and think back to your own school years. You wanted to be like all the other kids and not stand out like a sore thumb to be jeered at.

Children just don’t realise that not all parents can afford to pay top prices for children’s shoes and clothes, but your own child will not consider that, he or she wants to be the same as others, and if the other children have it why can’t they!

Do you go to parent evenings?  Your child may not always worry about this but it does give you a good idea of how your child is developing in their studies, and in their behaviour at school.  If you take an interest it will encourage your child to try and do better.

It is no use going back to your own school days when trying to help your children with their school work, you will probably find yourself at a loss to understand, as even the teaching methods have changed.

Many lessons are now computerised and your child will probably be computer literate, so if you don’t have a computer at home and you know nothing about them don’t even think of trying to help them with their school work.

Due to the age we now live in most parents keep a strict eye on their children and going out alone is not an option for them, but as they reach the age of ten or eleven they may start rebelling against this as many of their school friends are already allowed to go off and play alone.

You now have to learn how to let go and give child some freedom so they can start their own learning curve on how to go it alone. You may have misgivings but that is all part of being a parent.

Allow your kid to realize what are the penalties for bad manners will probably be, to enable them to make an option beforehand. Your kid needs to realize, for instance, where breaks will occur, how much time they are going to take, and the way to identify when they're finished. Keeping Calm When Your Child Chucks a Tantrum

By admin On July 3, 2010 No Comments

Most young children throw tantrums as a way of dealing with their frustration and anger. As they get older they learn how to deal with this in different ways and tantrums are usually reduced. Children under the age of four are most likely to throw a tantrum if they are tired, hungry or over -stimulated. Being aware of what triggers your child's tantrums will help you to avoid these situations. For instance make sure you don't go shopping with a toddler who is tired an/or hungry.

When children throw tantrums, make sure you don't inadvertently reward their behaviour by giving them what they want. It might stop their tantrum at the time, but they will soon learn to throw another one every time they want something. As they get older they learn how to deal with this in different ways and tantrums are usually reduced. Children under the age of four are most likely to throw a tantrum if they are tired, hungry or over -stimulated. Being aware of what triggers your child's tantrums will help you to avoid these situations. For instance make sure you don't go shopping with a toddler who is tired an/or hungry.A tantrum can sometimes be sidetracked by distracting the child's attention away from the stress-causing factor, e.g. if an older child has taken their toy. Once the tantrum is in full swing, you just have to wait it out.

It is important that the parent stays calm, or pretends to, during a tantrum. Getting angry yourself will only make the situation worse. A tantrum can sometimes be sidetracked by distracting the child's attention away from the stress-causing factor, e.g. if an older child has taken their toy. Once the tantrum is in full swing, you just have to wait it out. The child cannot and will not be open to reasoning at this stage. If you are at home, a time-out room or chair may help. If not, remove yourself from the room as long as the child can be safe alone.

Impact of school councils on personal and social development of a child

By admin On July 3, 2010 No Comments

School council is the group of elected students for proper and channeled presentation of students’ views. Thus, it carries the responsibility of creating a valued and positive impact in improving school environment, student-teacher relationship, and academic and non-academic performance.

Well-coordinated school council implements proper discipline in aspects of life and thus prepares a child to come out with a high stamina, perseverance, and with profound respect for the elders and seniors.

School council plans about the yearly curriculum with due permission and coordination from teachers or from the Principal to implement innovative and fruitful presentation of different improvement programs to assist the learning session. It also takes care to nurture the values, aptitudes and aims of the students by interactions and mutual exchange of their views and problems with their teachers. So, these councils can contribute a great deal in the social and personal development of the students.  It is possible to nourish and develop the qualities of social responsibility, self-esteem, self awareness and love for freedom in every child by the positive impact created by school councils.

The school council should promote a healthy, clean, safe, and stimulating environment in the school so that the students learn to accommodate themselves with cleanliness and awareness towards hygiene life from their childhood. This will surely create a positive impact when these children grow up to become responsible adults.

The school council should arrange, with the amendment in administration by the school’s governing body, the active participation of parents in school programs, in addition to exchange of suggestions and plans for healthy promotional activities for students’ development.

The developmental plans by school councils initiate improvement of personal and impersonal skills in a student. Such plans help in the development of effective communication skills as part of the desired grooming plan for students. So, it goes without saying that the school councils play an important role in the overall development and improvement of the students.

ADHD Evaluation Procedures – Get This Right and You Can Raise a Happier Child

By admin On July 3, 2010 No Comments

Ideally getting an ADHD evaluation for your child will involve quite a bit of preparation but that is a very positive thing. Much better than getting a ten minute consultation with a busy family doctor who cannot be bothered to make a proper diagnosis!

A s well as preparing all the questionnaires which we should have time to look at well beforehand, we need to think, as parents, what the real problems are that we have noticed. When and where do the problems occur? Is there a problem only in one setting? Or are the problems occurring in several locations such as home, school, and social occasions with peers or other adult family members and relatives.

Maybe the word diagnosis is slightly inaccurate and ADHD evaluation is a more accurate one. This means that we are gathering as much information at our disposal so that we can make a better evaluation.

The most important part of the ADHD evaluation is when we are interviewed as parents. We will be asked about the duration of the symptoms, the family atmosphere and any problems which may be lurking there. Illness, bereavement, moving house are all likely to impact on the child's sense of security and wellbeing. It is wise not to hold back on any family tensions such as sibling rivalry, marital tensions and maybe discipline issues which lead to resentment and sulking.

Once all the questionnaires are completed and the teacher interviewed, then a possible ADHD evaluation can be made. The teacher will be an important element in the evaluation process as there may be pointers which can have a bearing on family life and vice versa. A proper evaluation should last at least two hours.

Let us fast forward to treatment for ADHD, should the diagnosis be positive. Apart from the vexed question of medication with conventional psychostimulants, we may want to consider alternative treatments for ADHD such as homeopathy. This is often ignored partly due to a certain lack of knowledge but also due to enormous prejudices which need to be faced and discussed openly.

I have prepared a site on what the advantages are and what are the benefits over the conventional drugs. I know that many parents are relieved that there are no side effects at all and the question about whether there is any risk of drug abuse is just not an issue. Why not click through and discover more.
.

Yes,you CAN raise happier, calmer and better behaved children. Discover how ADHD evaluation which has been properly carried out can impact your child's upbringing. Experts now tell us that child behavior modification combined with a natural treatment for ADHD is by far the most effective ADHD treatment.

Help For The Hyperactive Child – Four Action Points For Parents

By admin On July 2, 2010 No Comments

The first action point to plan some practical help for the hyperactive child is to make sure that their breakfast is not overloaded with sugar and carbohydrates (eg. cereals). All you have to do is make sure that there is some protein in the meal (scrambled or poached eggs on toast is fine). Researchers at the George Washington University School of Medicine, Washington, DC found that the hyperactive kids on high carbohydrate breakfast had difficulties with tests given to them a few hours afterward. When they were on the protein meal, they did much better. Apparently the carbohydrates increase serotonin levels which interfere with some chemical messengers in the brain which affects their concentration, attention and restlessness.

The second way to organize help for the hyperactive child is to make sure that the learning environment at school is taking into account his special needs. That means having a word with the teacher and even observing the class if the teacher agrees. You can find out if there is a behaviour plan and all the kids are signed up to it. Better still, if they been involved in drawing it up. You could also make sure that your child is quite near the teacher and is not near a window or door which can be very distracting. Some schools are now using stability balls instead of chairs. These are great in allowing kids some squirming room but at the same time they have to focus, otherwise they fall off ! This also helps them in the actual schoolroom tasks such as concentrating and focusing. What withdrawal of privileges are there if a child oversteps the mark?

One of the most alarming things you read about in ADHD blogs about help for the hyperactive child is the fact that \'s/he is not growing\' ! There are a host of other symptoms as well such as tremors, nail biting and aggression towards other children. That is one of the side effects of ADHD medication with psychostimulants, unfortunately. It is also only the tip of the iceberg. Even more alarming is the fact that the follow up studies done by the drug companies on long term effects of these drugs cover a two year period. Two years - yet Ritalin has been on the market for 40 years !

The third way of helping a hyperactive child is to find out more about these ADHD medications and what are the possible risks. Good websites are the ADHD blogs, forums and of course the FDA site itself which is finally waking up and will probably issue very soon the black box warnings about the dangerous side effects. You will read about sudden deaths, strokes and cardiac arrest here so you have been warned.

The fourth point of action in helping a hyperactive child is to find out what exactly ADHD alternative therapies have to offer. What exactly are the ingredients and are they effective? You may want to find out if there are any side effects and are they in any way addictive, like the ADHD medications. Once you have done your homework, you can them make an informed choice about what is really best for your child.

Robert Locke is a Health enthusiast who specializes in Children's Health. He has written extensively on ADHD. Discover what ADHD Alternative Therapy is available.

An easy way to begin teaching money saving skills to young children is to give them an allowance. You might want to base this on completion of some easy household chores. For young children, choose as small amount of money that they receive often, such as weekly.

Set Up Money Saving Containers
To help young children learn to save money, provide them with several savings containers, labeled with their savings goals. Small plastic jars work well. Try giving your kids their allowance in small denomination coins such as nickels and dimes, or even pennies, to make division between the savings jars easier.

Once your young child's allowance is established, explain the concept of dividing up her or his money, allowing it to accumulate for savings goals. It works well to physically show children how this works with a handful of change and the labeled jars.

Once young kids understand how saving money works and how they can benefit, they are often eager to get started. Help your children choose a couple items or activities as savings goals, that aren't too different.

You might also want to establish a mandatory category with a set amount of savings. For example, gifts for brothers or sisters, Sunday school offerings etc. Even a small percentage, maybe a nickel or dime out of each dollar of allowance can go a long ways in teaching values such as generosity and discipline.

Encourage Kids Money Saving Efforts
As young children are learning how to save and budget money, positive feedback for their successes is important. Stay involved with your child's money saving efforts, even if you think the items or activity being saved for is trivial or worthless.

Reward Young Children's Money Saving Efforts
Create money saving games to share with young kids to make the activity more fun for them. For instance, you might have one day a week in which you reward them with surprise small amounts of money for extra help they do on their own around the house. Or a money matching game in which you match their accumulated savings towards a more expensive goal.

Allow Young Kids to Blow Some of Their Allowances
Most of us like to spend some money impulsively at times. Young savers are likely to enjoy saving money more if they also spend some on unplanned activities and items. Allowing your kids the fun of blowing their allowances sometimes will help encourage them to save as well

Praise Can Do Wonders for Your Child

By admin On July 1, 2010 No Comments

When a child wins a trophy or an award and is applauded by the whole audience ,the people he looks for among the crowd are his parents. No matter how much he is appreciated, but it's the praise of the parents that makes him feel the magic of achievement. Praise assures and makes a child certain that he is moving in the right direction. It raises his confidence level and boosts his self-esteem. Use this tool lavishly yet carefully, for the right things and in the right way.

Praise efforts also and not only results : Appreciate when your child makes an attempt to do something or participates in any activity or competition regardless of the outcome. This would encourage him to keep trying and strengthen his belief in his abilities.

Praise genuinely : Don't flatter, be sincere in your appreciation. Use the tool of praise judiciously to encourage and not to manipulate a child's behaviour or else he may stop believing you and doubt your motives even when you are praising genuinely.

Be elaborate when you praise : Children may not believe or understand what he is being appreciated for unless and until you describe. Instead of saying 'You did well in the football match' when your child wasn't able to make any goal, tell him 'I liked the way you fought for the ball from the opposite team'.

Praise in the present : Don't praise keeping past weaknesses in mind but appreciate the present efforts. If your child paints a picture, don't praise saying 'Great, you have finally learnt to fill colours in the right way'. The effective way would be 'That's a lovely drawing. You have filled the colours so neatly and beautifully.'

Don't praise excessively : Enthusiasm while praising is alright but praising a child exceedingly can make him feel pressurized to perform or meet your expectations. Exaggeration may also make your child develop superiority complex or make him snobbish. Do remember, always praise a child according to his age and ability and not in comparison with other children.

Don't ever leave a chance to appreciate your child. Because your words of praise can give him confidence of lifetime and fuel him to do even better in life.

Mother’s Pride is headed by the renowned educationist and sought after parenting expert Mrs. Sudha Gupta. Her vision encompasses not only children but parents, teachers and the society on the whole.

As an educationist, she has single-handedly revolutionized pre-school education. Her thoughts have inspired parents and teachers to look at early childhood education from a new perspective. Her emphasis on overall development of child and not just academics has opened new window for tiny tots to blossom into extraordinary beings. Now this visionary has set her eyes to transform formal education system through Presidium, a proposed senior secondary school.

As an expert on parenting, she has given parenting its due importance and popularity. She conducts seminars and orientations regularly to guide parents about positive parenting. Her mission to transform parenting does not limit to a few thousand parents whose children pass out of various branches of Mother’s Pride but millions of parents across the country through her publications in leading newspapers and magazines.

As a social activist, Sudha Gupta’s concern for the society and country is evident not only in her writing, but takes practical shape in the form of a NGO called Sparsh.

Sparsh has so far reached out to millions of poor, needy, mentally and physically challenged children as well as generous contributions have been made as aid to families of Kargil martyrs and Tsunami victims.

In just a few years, Mrs. Gupta has achieved more than what would ordinarily take a lifetime.

Budget Cuts Hurting State Child Health Program

By admin On June 30, 2010 No Comments

Forty thousand Kansas children depend on a state program for health insurance, but the state program is failing to do its job because of budget cuts. Now some parents are worried how their children are going to get the care they need.

"I just couldn't believe the state would cut a program for Kansas kids," says Harold Stultz, a dad with children on Healthwave.

Like thousands of Kansas parents, Harold Stultz, who's self-employed depends on state program Healthwave to provide health insurance for his children, including 12-year-old Keenan.

So when Keenan hurt his knee wrestling, Stultz assumed he had insurance. He was wrong.

"They said they had everything they need, but due to the economy and cutbacks they couldn't process the applications." says Stultz.

"I figured if it happened to me it happened to a lot of other people," says Carmetti Klein a mom with children on Healthwave.

She's right. Klein, just like Shultz, assumed her children were covered. She sent in her application on time, but learned it wasn't processed.

"I got on the phone and told them I needed this processed," says Klein.

The state's not denying there are problems, so why are there delays? A spokesperson says he could: "verify that the delay in processing applications is due to a shortage of resources and manpower. We understand that many parents are frustrated at the delays in processing applications. This has been a problem since the recession really hit in Kansas in late 2008 and early 2009."

It's only getting worse because of the economy. The need is growing and applications are up dramatically.

Until his application is processed, Stultz will have to find money to treat his son's knee. So far, that's about $6,000.

'It just upsets me that there are more people in my situation," says Stultz.

Kansas provides low-cost health insurance to children who meet the following criteria: they must be under the age of 19, not covered by Medicaid, have a family income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level and who are not eligible for state employee health insurance.

The state says it is taking proactive steps to speed up processing, but it's just now putting those into effect and it's going to take time.

A specific number of pending applications is unavailable, but it is said to be a sizeable amount.

Adhd Child Symptoms – How Effective are Natural Treatments?

By admin On June 29, 2010 No Comments

Here is your situation - you are now faced with an ADHD diagnosis which has just been confirmed by your doctor. That was what you thought anyway as all the ADHD child symptoms which your child has, were straight out of the manual. The over-excitability, outbursts and disruptive behaviour were definitely not those of a normal child.

But you still have to deal with the constant fidgeting, the non-stop motion and the chattering. You are even under pressure from the school as the psychologist is recommending that your child be put on Ritalin (methylphenidate). He claims that he knows a thing or two about ADHD child symptoms.

Join the club - ADHD is now an epidemic so no need to feel alone. Actually it probably touches up to 15% of all schoolchildren in the USA and there are a lot of adults out there too who have ADHD and they do not even know it ! If you talk to your doctor about what kind of medicine he will prescribe, he will probably mention some of the side effects. After all these are psychostimulants and many of them are basically amphetamines which means they are going to affect the heart, blood pressure and there is a risk (however small )of cardiac arrest. According to the Pediatrics journal, there is also a risk of hallucinations.

Rest assured that it has nothing or very little to do with your parenting. But is there no other type of treatment which can alleviate ADHD child symptoms ? There must be some type of treatment which will not drug your child and turn him or her into a potential drug user (or should I say abuser ) Well, there is a natural homeopathic ADHD treatment which can help manage the symptoms of ADHD in child. Your doctor, unless he is a convinced homeopath, will not want to know so no need to ask him.

Homeopathic treatment for ADHD will involve a holistic approach to the suppression of symptoms of ADHD in child. They will be just as effective in reducing hyperactivity, distractability and impulsivity without having any of the alarming side effects of psychostimulants which I mentioned above. These homeopathic treatments will also help your child to stay focused and concentrate which is another one of the classic ADHD child symptoms. Why not find out more about how these homeopathic remedies can help you to return to a normal tranquil family life without all the trauma and worry that ADHD psychostimulants can cause?

Child Safety They Call Me Baby Speed Bump

By admin On June 29, 2010 No Comments

Copyright (c) 2010 Lucille Uttermohlen

The government can't solve all of our problems. If it could, the guy who served me a cold hamburger for lunch would be facing hard time. I mean, after all, it's not like his oversight is a first offense. He's served other unsuspecting patrons the same greasy, undercooked lump of cow, and should have to pay with his spatula.

There are some things our state governments should tackle, and one of those is the protection of our children. Hey, I don't like kids either, but they do grow up eventually, and they make lousy speed bumps, so I think our legislators ought to address this problem. Little kids, I mean the ones under say twelve, shouldn't be allowed to ride motorcycles.

Yes, I can just hear it. Its like the jokes circulating the Internet where manufacturers advise us we should keep their knives out of children or that using their electric hair dryers in the shower is not a good idea. To most of us, these words of wisdom seem so obvious that we are amazed that anyone would feel it necessary to tell us. But, while there is a limit to human intelligence, human stupidity is boundless. Here is a case in point.

I have a client who hired me to file an emergency petition to keep her former husband from transporting their 3-year-old, 32 pound kid on the back of his Harley. Fortunately, the judge made the right decision, and for the time being, Daddy has to pick the kid up in his truck. But the Welfare department and the police felt helpless to intervene against this behavior because it is not illegal. It's not???? you might be saying. That's what I said, and I'm a lawyer. It is true. You can't drive your kids around in a car, van, or truck without appropriate safety restraints unless you want a ticket. It is, however, perfectly legal in all states for a little kid to be placed on the back of a motorcycle and only be protected by Daddy's driving ability and the strength of his grip on Daddy's shirt.

The fact that Junior could fly off the bike if Daddy were to hit one of our many potholes or suddenly have to brake because of traffic conditions has no bearing on whether Daddy is guilty of neglecting his duty. I guess if the kid lets go or loses his grip, its his tough break. After all, it was on his watch, and he sure as heck will know better next time, if there is a next time.

The paramedics who scrape his little body off the road, and the coroner who has to verify the cause of death have no gripe. If the little idiot had just held on like Daddy told him to, he'd possibly still be with us. But, who cares? Dead kids make great news copy.

Maybe I'm being old fashioned. After all, I am a lady of a certain age, and while that age isn't anything I care to advertise, when I was growing up, my parents had the strange notion that they were supposed to protect me. They didn't let me do harmless things like roller skate on Highway 52 or take rides home from school with strangers. Neither of them drove a motorcycle, so maybe I'm missing the point.

I ask you, parents of the world, am I wrong? Is there an excellent reason for a little kid to ride on the back of a "hog" that I don't understand? Would we be denying our youth a right as important as, say, their education if we outlawed this behavior? Would our nursery school students stage a protest in Washington if this exciting and fun form of transportation was universally outlawed for them? What do you think? Tell me. Better yet, check your state laws and tell your legislature if your kids aren't protected from such stupidity before some unsuspecting toddler is killed or permanently injured.

3 Effective Child Discipline Techniques That Work Like A Charm

By admin On June 28, 2010 No Comments

Learning effective child discipline techniques is very important, especially in these modern times. With so many parents not really knowing what to do or how to deal with their kids, it's not a surprise how many children end up having complicated personal issues and baggage at a very young age!

With the help of effective child discipline techniques, however, you can be confident that your kids will grow up to be mature and level-headed individuals. Read on to find out more!

Effective Child Discipline Technique # 1: Stick To The Plan.

When you tell your children that they must sleep early or else they won't have dessert for a week, you must mean it.

You can't suddenly back out from the deal just because you feel guilty or sorry for them. Never mind that dessert happens to be their favorite chocolate cake; you still need to stick to your guns. Why?

Well, it's easy enough to forgive and forget; but that gives your children the assumption that they can get away with basically anything because you won't follow through with their punishment anyway.

And that is one lesson you don't want your kids to learn if you want them growing up to be responsible adults.

Effective Child Discipline Technique # 2: Take On A Serious Tone.

Getting your child to behave and listen to you has a lot to do with how you phrase your warnings and what tone of voice you use.

Asking your kids if they could please stop playing ball inside the house in a needy and desperate tone is definitely not the best way to go about it. Instead, be direct.

In an authoritative voice, tell your kids, "Don't play ball inside the house." Giving them a stern look also works wonders.

Effective Child Discipline Technique # 3: Talk To Your Kids About The Consequences Of Their Actions.

It's crucial to teach children why they should or shouldn't do certain things. For example, it's not just enough to say, "Don't play ball inside the house or else you won't get dessert for a month!" Not getting dessert isn't the real consequence here.

Teach your kids why they shouldn't be playing ball inside the house in the first place. "If you play ball here, you'll break our vases and hurt yourself."

By making your kids understand that there are real consequences, you'll have more responsible kids in the future.

Effective child discipline techniques aren't about physical punishments. Most of the time, they're about treating children like adults, making them understand the gravity of the situation and leading by example.
