Talk to your HR department, they should be confidential about it. The HR department will be contacted by the government anyway.

When you talk to your boss, just be man to man – businessman to businessman about it. State that this is a one in a lifetime opportunity for you and you need to pursue it, but if things don’t work, I will still be very happy to continue to work here.

I would approach it like that.

How to have a security background check done without losing my job?
I applied for a position with the government, but before they can offer me the job, they have to do a security clearance background check–including a conversation with my current employer. How do I help my employer feel good about this, so I don’t lose my position until the other job comes through? (assuming I’d even take the job when I get the offer).

If I am answering questions for a security background check, can I tell the person being checked?
A guy I know is trying to get a job with the government and needs a security clearance and the people doing the security background check called me to ask about him. Am I legally allowed to tell the guy that is being checked out that I got called?

Various alternatives to losing my home vs. Air Force Background Security Check?
I lost my full time job as a civilian pilot and am default on my home mortgage. I have been accepted as a pilot into the USAF Reserves. How will various outcomes of losing my home affect my ability to pass the Air Force Background Security Check? Such as a loan modification, short sale, deed in lieu of, or foreclosure? Possibly filing bankrupcy as well?

What shows up on a security clearance background check?
I have an interview on Monday and they are doing a full background check for a security clearance. I have a dui, evading, and arrest without conviction for a domestic. The dui is about 15 years old, the evading about 12 years old, and the arrest a little over a year old.

Anything that affects your credit rating can cause problems. I would talk to a credit councilor and see what the best course of action is. Good Luck

Could you hang out with Hillary without having a security background check done like Hsu?
I think not. I had to pay (donate) $1,000 and have a security background check done on me before they would let me near her.

I think she found out you were a Bush supporter, which led her and the secret service to question your mental stability.
