A higher end service would be CrimCheck ( http://www.crimcheck.com ), they have actual investigators digg deep into court and other systems to provide the most information. Those background check generally cost $50-$100 and can take up to a week.
Faster and cheaper results come from instant background check websites, such as http://www.easybackgroundchecks.com , they usualy cost $15 for a statewide check and $30 for a nationwide check, but since the data comes from online records only, courts that haven’t put thier records into a computer will not show in these reports. But they still do a good job.

It depends upon the job. Nurses are checked more thoroughly than dishwashers.
These other answers are crap.

there are a few service providers that check work references but most don’t. a lot depends on how much the employer is willing to spend on a pre-employment check. these checks are covered by all the same laws as credit checks. Fair Credit Reporting Act
a background check consist of information found in public records that involve criminal, judgments, workers comp settlements, licenses and certifications etcetera. they use your name, aliases, address, former addresses, social security number, drivers license/state ID and birth date to locate information.
a reference check uses employers and personal references that you provide to check character, work habits, employment verification and job performance. generally the reference check is done by the prospective employer.

It shouldn’t. A charge is not a conviction.

What do Employers use to perform pre-employment background checks?
What site or service provider (if any) do most employers use to run pre-employment criminal background checks? Also, if a conviction is had in 1 state, will the record of it show up on a background check performed in a different state?

How is it still pending after 2 1/2 years? If you mean that you have been charged but have not yet pleaded guilty or gone to trial, it will not show. Usually, only convictions (including pleas) will show up in a detailed background check.
But if you mean that you have pleaded guilty, but will be able to withdraw your plea after you complete a successful term of probation, that may show up on a background check.
Other types of “deferred adjudication” may appear on background checks as well. It depends on the court’s policy for releasing this information.
