The FBI maintains “NCIC” the National Crime Information Center system.
Every law enforcement agency within the USA reports annually through arrest statistics.
Because the system is operated by the FBI…all states and law enforcement agencies have access to “criminal histories.”

do fire departments/emt services in Seattle area do federal criminal background checks?
i am studying to become a firefighter meanwhile i applied for a government census job and then recieved a letter saying i have a criminal record though the fbi background check. i checked my non federal criminal record a year ago and it said i had a clean record (i have been arrested twice in my adult life- assault 4 degree (which was dropped/dismissed) and a negligent driving 2nd degree. both are gross misdemeanors and happened 5+ years ago. if i apply to become a firefighter/emt or emt will they check fbi criminal history which would prevent me from getting hired?

Do arrests in one state show up on a federal criminal records check? How about a check from another state?
A Colorado Bureau of Investigations criminal records check reveals an arrest for DWAI. Would an FBI criminal background check reveal this as well? Would a records check from another state? Thanks much.

How common is a criminal background check used as a condition of employment in European countries?
An American who has dual citizenship with an EU country wants to start a new life in Europe due to her federal criminal record in the U.S. One Frenchman she talked to said criminal record checks usually aren’t conducted on prospective new employees. I’m not so sure about that, so I’ve come here to ask.
Just to clarify: I’m not inquiring about myself. It’s about an American friend who also has Irish citizenship. Her employment application will be made in Europe — not sure which EU country she’ll be moving to, though.

It depends, two of my employers have done one, two others have not.
If you are dealing with legal or sensitive issues, then usually you are checked.
However, the majority of jobs do not require one.
But you have to fill in employment questionnaires at larger companies and if you have a criminal record but do not indicate that when asked, but you are found out later, it is an offense and you can be immediately dismissed.

You are confusing the federal court system with NCIC (FBI). In general employers cannot access NCIC at all. They can access the federal court system, but it is separate, and some employers either don’t know about it or don’t want to pay for it. Also, most online background check sites do not cover the federal court system because date of birth is not available as an identifier.

What types of employers perform Federal Background Checks?
When most employers do criminal background checks, they only search city, county, and state records. For federal records the FBI database must be accessed and the background check becomes more expensive, so many employers do not bother. If anyone knows more info on this…..please let me know.

The background checks that agencies do are all the same, federal or local. They look at what’s called NCIC, the National Crime Information Center. The fire department will absoultely conduct a background check and they will find the same thing that the government found for the census job. The reason you didn’t find anything is because civilians don’t have access to the same thing. You can only find convictions and court documents, but checks conducted by federal or local agencies find your entire history of charges, convictions, etc. However being that Assault in the 4th Degree is NOT a felony there is no reason you should be precluded from fire service or any other job unless you A. lied about it or B. someone without a record beat you out, because it is a determining factor. But if you neglected to mention it even though it wasn’t a conviction that’s pretty much a disqualifier. You need to tell them if you were even charged with it.
