Would a lot of criminal defense attorneys be out of jobs if marijuana were legalized?

No, but a lot of drug dealers would see their market share shrink.

Have done both.
As a defense attorney, you have clients expecting the impossible and one of the hardest tasks is breaking to them the bad news that they are between a rock and a hard place and need to plead guilty to a tougher sentence than they would like. Some times, you get a case that is actually defensible, but most of the time the police do a good enough job that a defendant who tries to play hard ball is going to wind up screwing themselves over.
As a prosecutor, you have discretion to do the right thing in a case. Sometimes a defendant will back you into a corner where you have to take a tough stand to be able to deal with the defense bar on other cases, but those situations are few and far between.

There is no “most” every area is different.
for example in alot of small town rual areas there is no defence attorneys on staff. Various lawyers in that area are required to take on cases for “free” as part of thier bar members in that area.
In other places both the DA and the defense attorneys start at somewhere around 30,000 to 40000 a year.
And in general for alot of attorneys, such as bankrutpcy and some other civil attorneys, alot make less than 100,000 a year.
But the real issue with a public defender there is no funds for expert witness, to have evidence reviewed, to hire speical labs and the such.

How much money do court appointed criminal defense attorneys make?
The US Economic Census indicates that attorneys median income is $165,000 a year it also indicates that the revenue per employee in law offices is $288,000. I read an auditors report that said court appointed attorneys make less than $10.00 an hour and that, as a result most inocent people would be better off if we didn’t have the right to an attorney. Also said that court appointed attorneys are an economicly disenfranchised group that need assistance. In high school I was taught that our criminal justice system was the best on earth. What is the truth? Are the people who are represented by court appointed attorneys getting real representation? Are the attorneys funded well enough to do their jobs? Do the attorneys make too much money? This is really an opinion poll. Please consider disclosing your status in your answer, ie. attorney or not attorney.

If you had to choose between two jobs, would you rather be A). Criminal defense attorney; or B). Prosecutor?

Can anyone recommend a good criminal defense attorney?
I have a friend that got caught up in a bad situation. He committed two crimes, one crime was for not paying a taxi cab, the other was shoplifting for food. He had his court date set, went to court but was told he could only get the cab crime taken care of and that his OTHER court date was set for the SAME day in a different county. When he came back to double check this information the court system on the internet said he was actually at the right court in the first place. So something is screwy here. He doesn’t have any money since he is homeless and can’t get a job since he now has a warrant due to this mis-hap. I am wondering if anyone knows of any good attorneys out there? I would like to help my friend. Thank you.

If he has no money then he has the right to a public defense attorney; he has the right to get a government paid lawyer.
But I think he should try to get the money to pay for the cab and the food and maybe they’ll be willing to drop the charged.
