Is what criminal defence lawyers do justifiable?
I’d love to hear your opinions.
My dean did tell us how tough it is to be a criminal lawyer, especially when it comes to dealing with the public. So, do you think what they do is justifiable — why or why not?
Thanks in advance =)

If you want a system that affords everyone due process, then yes, it is justifiable. Even when serial killers are on trial.

You can find out about your criminal defence lawyer by look at his court case track record, and successes in getting his/her client cleared of the charges or reducing the severity of the judgement/sentencing against them.
As for trust. That is up to each individual client and how trusting they are and what information they wish to hold and what to tell their lawyer.
Since you used the qualifier ‘can you really trust “ALL” lawyers’, the answer to that is “no”, just like you can’t trust “ALL” that you read and see on the Internet, especially Yahoo!Answer.

It depends where you are. Or, rather, where you want to study and practise law. Yahoo! says this question was asked from Australia, so I’ll assume you’re Australian.
In that case, you would have to do a minimum of four years at university (for an undergraduate-entry Bachelor of Laws), then some form of practical legal training. Normally that would be either a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice or a clerkship with a law firm, which would take at least six months or a year, respectively.
For comprehensive information, I suggest you look at the website of your state’s law society or bar association for information on the requirements for admission to legal practice.
Also, look at some universities’ websites. They will have information about options such as double degrees, which you should definitely consider.
Also, note that Melbourne University (and possibly one or two others) does not teach a Bachelor of Laws anymore, instead they offer only a Juris Doctor. That’s the American system, which is basically what the answer above is talking about.
Other universities (I think ANU is one) offer both the Bachelor of Laws and the Juris Doctor. And still others (like the University of Adelaide) just offer the Bachelor of Laws, but with a graduate-entry variant which is effectively the exact same thing as a Juris Doctor.

It depends on what programs your school has. You could major in Criminology/Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology or Political Science. Talk with a guidance counselor at you high school, or a college advisor to be sure.

You can also visit online websites that rate lawyers
