Background Screening

Top Ten Trends in the Pre-Employment Background Screening Industry For 2009
By Lester Rosen
Employment Screening Resources (ESR), a leading national employment screening background firm, released its "Second Annual Top Ten Trends in the Pre-Employment Background Screening Industry" for 2009 today. Although issues from 2008 remain on the list, the 2009 trends reflect increasing concerns over the use of Facebook and similar sites, lawsuits looming over inaccurate Background Screening reports, increasing government scrutiny of the screening industry and privacy and security issues.
"In the current legal environment, businesses want to make sure they are not only exercising due diligence but are also ahead of the curve on legal issues," said Lester S. Rosen, attorney at law and founder of ESR and author of two books on background screening. "The quickest way to get sued is to not understand the legal environment and latest trends surrounding background checks and employment."
Rosen believes that the federal and state governments will require more background screening in 2009, especially in sensitive jobs, and that more businesses will make Pre-Employment Background Screening a requirement for the job. The increased use of Applicant Tracking Systems will lead to "one button" clicks for background checks, he says.
"At the same time, consumers are worried about their privacy. That

What exactly is a background screening?
I want to apply to a job tomorrow, but they require a complete background and drug screening. I have never done drugs so I am not nervous about that. However 5 and a half months ago I had a 6 month order of protection placed on me in a different state. Will this show up on my “background screening” or is that meant for things like felony’s, assault.. and so fourth. thanks.

This is a very competetive field. You would have to find your niche, (one idea is to service your own community ex – your home town investigators) to be successful.
As far as having a investigator, I do not believe you would have to have one on staff. Everything is automated through computers. However, you could offer this service and outsource the investigator.
Good luck to you

What is the meaning of “drug and background screening employer?”?
A job offer says that your employement is contengent on the results of “drug and background screening check.” I dont use drugs so that is fine. What does background screening entails? –It is like finding your credit score?

who knows what software I can purchase for my new background screening business?
I want to do background screening for landlords, employers & condo associations. I need to find the software to do this but have been unable to locate it any place. I found one on the internet but it is to run a web based company. I want to do this from my home office and be able to give it the personal touch. I believe there will be fewer errors made this way. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

They will do a background check to verify the information you have given them in your resume and/or job application. This could include education, previous employers, criminal background (did you answer a question regarding convicted of a felony?) and possibly credit. The credit check is not to see how your credit is per se, it is more about wage garnishments, warrants against you (for debt issues) and things that will interfere with your ability to do the job.
As long as the information that you have given them is truthful you should be ok. If you have lied about working somewhere, a degree you don’t have or such then they can withdraw the offer of employment.

Do you have to have an investigator on staff to have a background screening company?
I have been thinking about starting a background/tenant screening company. I have been looking at some web-based companies for the service instead of a software and trying to keep it updated etc. If anyone had some good honest advice and answers please advise.

How much would you be willing to pay for an extensive background screening for a financial advisor?
This would cover background checks on an individual including:
- bankruptcy check
- criminal and civil check
- credit check
- better business bureau check
- securities/exchange commission check
- checks with federal, state and private agencies
- state securities department check
- dept. of insurance check
- professional license check
- financial industry regulatory authority check
What would this background screening be worth to you?

$30 for 3 years of unlimited background check is all I HAVE PAID.
I already have a subscription at http://www.netdetective.com/ – it’s $30 for 3 years and the largest database out there (3.1 billion records) with unlimited searches for 3 years.
It’s the best site out there, used by private investigators all the time.
I would never pay more than that and what’s great is you can use it over and over for 3 years for no extra.
