Zippered Mattress Covers Do More Than Stop Dust Mites

Author: Mike Krause

For years we pretty much just sold our zippered mattress covers to our customers who suffered from allergies. Not anymore. If you have allergies, MCS, Psoriasis, bed bugs, incontinence or just want a cleaner bed a zippered mattress cover is what you need.

It use to be the only people who covered their mattress was someone who had been to the doctor and had been diagnosed with allergies or asthma. Allergies to dust mites is still one of the most common allergies and zippered mattress covers is still the most effective way to solve the problem. A covered mattress stops 95+ percent of the allergens.

With the increased problem of bed bug infestation more and more people are putting zippered covers on their mattress as a preventative measure in case a bed bug ever gets into their home. We wrote an entire article about bed bugs and our line of bed bug mattress covers. One thing to keep in mind is you really need to use a cover made with a membrane fabric if your worried about bed bugs.

Many people who suffer from psoriasis, a chronic skin condition, find that the mattress and pillow covers help them control some of the itchiness and redness associated with psoriasis. The zippered covers also help to keep the lotions many use off the mattress itself.

MCS, multiple chemical sensitivity, patients also cover their mattress for fear of exposure to chemicals that are used in making a mattress. Mattresses can be made with polyurethane foam, a petroleum-based material that emits VOC'S,volatile organic compounds, that can cause respiratory problems and skin irritation. Formaldehyde, pesticides (used on the cotton batting), and flame-retardant chemicals, which can cause cancer and nervous-system disorders.  We have had many memory foam mattress owners call because they can't sleep with the smell.

The membrane fabric zippered mattress covers have been used for years on children's beds due to bed-wetting. Now we are seeing parents use them on their kid's beds, child to college age, just because it keeps the spilt glass of water, tea or coke from soaking the mattress. We put them on our daughters mattress when she moved into her college apartment. No telling what was in that mattress.

Bottom line is even if you don't have allergies having your mattress covered with a zippered cover is a good thing. I read a study a few years back that a mattress left uncovered for 12 years will doubli in weight. Pretty gross if you ask me.

Bed bugs are little nasty bugs that feed on human and animal blood. They tend to be most common in areas where people sleep and generally concentrate in beds, including mattresses, box springs, and bed frames. Other sites where bed bugs often reside include curtains, the corners inside dressers and other furniture, cracks in wallpaper (particularly near the bed), and inside the spaces of wicker furniture.
Since bed bugs can live for months without feeding, they can also be found in vacant homes.

To get rid of them the pest control expert may recommend certain forms of deep-cleaning such as scrubbing infested surfaces with a stiff brush to remove eggs, dismantling bed frames and furniture, filling cracks in floors, walls, and moldings, encasing mattresses within special bags, or using a powerful vacuum on cracks and crevices.

Encasements should always be used for non-vinyl mattresses and box springs in bed
bug prevention and management. Special bed bug-proof encasements are made of high
quality cloth material, so they do not tear easily, and they have no folds around the zipper for
bed bugs to find shelter. Cheaper vinyl encasements are available but need to be installed
carefully to avoid tears in the vinyl. If a small hole appears, duct tape can be used to repair it.
Holes MUST be repaired to prevent bed bugs from either gaining protection on the inside of
the cover, or to prevent bed bugs from escaping from the infested bedding. Encasing both
mattress and box spring eliminates the need to discard bedding by trapping bed bugs inside
and providing a smooth simple outer surface that can be inspected, vacuumed and cleaned
easily. It is highly recommended that mattresses and box springs be encased, to
preserve the sleeping area and to make bed bug inspections quick and easy.

A used mattress is usually not a good idea. If you know the person who owned it, I wouldn’t worry about it. (If it was your brother or a friend.) Otherwise, I would never recommend a used mattress, plastic cover or no.

Does a vinyl mattress zipper protector keep out bed bugs?
I just found out that we have a small infestation of bed bugs. We threw out our ol mattress and got new ones. I searched online for anti-bed bug covers and they were about $140 for mattress and box spring. I found a vinyl zipper cover in target for only 11.99. Will the vinyl keep the bed bugs out? Also, what can I use to kill them?

do i cover a brand new mattress that has bed bugs or buy a new one?
Should I get rid of the carpet as well to do away with bedbugs and where do they come from?

I just recently realized that I have bed bugs – How do I dispose of the mattress and box spring safely?
Disposable mattress bed bug bags (covers) can cost anywhere from $30 to $60 each here in Canada (just for a Twin bed). Any alternatives? I’m in an apartment building.

If i have an anti-bed bug mattress cover, and i am getting bites.?
    What could the bites be?
i put the cover on the mattress the second i got the bed. i have had a exterminator come before. And i got new pillows and covers for the pillows. Understand these are covers that completely cover the bed completely.
