Getting rid of bed bugs has been a problem documented as early as medieval times in Europe or during the time of Aristotle in Greece. Often attacking when one is fast asleep, bed bugs are smart creatures that choose to move when the target least knows it. Every person will have his own version of a bed bug story and most likely it will be bad.

Bed bugs are scientifically known as "Cimex lectularius", they are wingless with a brownish ultra thin body. Various studies indicate these creatures originated from Asia but now can be seen in all parts of the world. Bed bugs thrive in areas with a warm and dry climate but they have been able to invade the northern regions because of the proliferation of heated buildings.

The adult bed bug is 1/4 to 3/8 in length when it is unfed but its size will expand considerably after a hearty meal. A starving bed bug looks far more different compared to one that is well fed. Young bed bugs or nymphs resemble the adults but have a yellowish color after molting. A nymph can develop into a fully grown bed bug for as fast as one month depending on how much it is able to eat.

You’ll probably have to get a new mattress and when you do, there are special mattress protector pads that bed bugs can’t get through. There’s getting to be a real epidemic of bed bugs this year!

OOOOh I am so sorry to hear that. We were on a cruise with them and brought them home. I hired an exterminator. They can be VERY difficult to get rid of. Hire a pro! In Maryland it cost $400 to hire a pro.
Here is a link to a very informative site:
    http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef636.asp

You need to launder everything in the home (clothes drapes etc) on hot, dry atleast 20 min on high or dry clean. Store in space bags.
Vaccume the furniture, beds, floors etc. throw out the bag. Exterminate.
This may need to be repeated several times.
The bugs can live up to 1 year+ with out a blood meal. They can be smaller than a poppy seed and reproduce like crazy. They are nocturnal and hide in cracks and crevices. They are also VERY good hitch hikers. be careful that no one else gets them.

Good Luck! I know how crazy this made me. I canceled Thanksgiving dinner and would not go to any one elses home until I knew we wiped them out.

What I understand about bed bugs is that they come to the bed at night to feed from the walls/crevices from which they live. Sometimes, you’ll still find them in your bedding. Heat kills the bugs. Throw your bedding (which can’t be washed in hot water) in the dryer to kill the bugs. In order to rid your home of the population, you’ll need to call an exterminator to fumigate your home. I would get his suggestion about mattress replacement.

You can’t get rid of bed bugs if they are really bed bugs that you are talking about. Bed bugs are very tiny and live deep inside your mattress. The only way to get rid of them is to get rid of the mattress and your pillows. Just washing your bedding in detergent will suffice. Everyone and every mattress gets bed bugs but most people don’t notice them because they get new mattresses. Bed bugs eat our dead skin and are actually a beneficial bug. The older the mattress the greater the infestation which means that if you can see them then it’s time to get a new mattress. A good rule of thumb is to get a new mattress every 10 years and a new pillow yearly.
