Beware Hotels Mau Have Bed Bugs

Author: Judd Snell

Bed bugs have been eradicated on the soil of the United States right after World War I because of the widespread use of DDT (which is now banned for use). But bed bugs are making a comeback. And it may reach your own household if you checked-in in a bed bug infested motel or hotel. Hotel bed bugs are not uncommon. In fact, hotel and motels are the perfect place for hotel bed bugs transmission. Immigrants that had lived in a country and place with bed bugs infestation are suspected to be the people who brings back bed bugs in the US through their luggages. And of course, it is in motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and hotels that immigrants and international travellers stay and unpack their luggages with bed bugs hitchhikers.

Once hotel bed bugs infested a single room, these hotel bed bugs crawl on to the next room, create a new colony, and then crawl to another room, and then create another colony. People have their wrong notion about hotel bed bugs; they thought that hotel bed bugs infest only those hotels and motels that are filthy. This is totally untrue. Hotel bed bugs do not dwell on a place because they are filthy (like cockroaches or rats) but because they are attracted to carbon monoxide (which humans exhale) and their human hosts from where hotel bed bugs withdraws blood from. So, this means that even ritzy and posh hotels may have hotel bed bugs. Common location of hotel bed bugs infestations.

Hotel bed bugs are reddish brown, oval shaped (like appleseeds), and are very flat which allow them to hide and lay eggs in tiny crevices. A small crack or hole can harbor hotel bed bugs. Hotel bed bugs are nocturnal insects. They feed during the night and are generally more active an hour before dawn. Some hotel bed bugs feed during daytime, especially those who haven't fed for a few months. An adult hotel bed bug may last eighteen (18) months without feeding. Their regular feeding cycle (when a host is present) is five to ten days.

If you want to check out the hotel for hotel bed bugs, go to places where a human being might stay, such as in bed, sofa, chairs, carpets, and furniture nearest to the bed. Check the crevices of these furniture including the mattress interiors and seams and bed frames. The edge of a bed mattress and under it, are often the breeding ground of hotel bed bugs. Telltale signs of hotel bed bugs infestation. Heavy infestation have the offensive, sweet, musty scent. Edges of upholstery or mattresses have brownish dark lines. These are the excrements of hotel bed bugs. You feel itchy an hour after you stayed on the bed and even after you left the bed. Hotel bed bug bites are more itchy than mosquito bites and the itch lasts for hours. Size of hotel bed bugs infestations.

If you have seen one or two crawling hotel bed bugs, this is an indication that the infestation might be heavy. Hotel bed bugs are rarely seen. But the moment you see hotel bed bugs crawling near you, it means that there are many adult hotel bed bugs and they are fighting over a single host. How to avoid hotel bed bugs hitchhikers? Hotel bed bugs are like hitchhikers, they will hide on your luggages and they will start breeding on your home. To avoid hotel bed bugs hitchhikers on your luggage try these following tips Buy a non-gel type insect spray. Gel type don't last and may not kill hotel bed bugs. The night before you leave your hotel room, spray on a non-gel insect killer on your luggage bag. Be sure you have removed your clothes and other things first. Don't put your clothes on the bed.

Wipe the bath tub dry and put your things there. Hotel bed bugs won't try to breed on bath tub crevices since people don't usually stay there. Check your items one by one before you pack them. Check for any moving, appleseeds sized hotel bed bugs. They are visible from the naked eye.

There is an easy solution to this problem – before bringing your luggage into the room, check the sheets and roll them back to check around the seams of a the mattress. If you see any brown, reddish spots then there could be a problem. If you do, call the manager. See the mattress picture in the resource below.

If the sheets and mattress are spot free, then there is a good chance that the room is bed bug free. Other bed bug travel tips are listed in the resource.

Santa Cruz is a beautiful place…ideal in the Summer. However, being a prime living & vacation spot, there is heavy Summer traffic, lots of tourists. Tourist season is now so you WILL be paying top dollar, even for a Motel 6. Stay away from Beach Flats…the area surrounding the Boardwalk. Beach Hill area (above the flats) or Downtown Santa Cruz is a safer bet. Consider anything on Ocean Street…from here you can walk to ocean, restaurants Check out University Inn on Ocean street: http: //www.santacruz.com/universityinn/ .
This is a housing facility for UCSC students, as well as hotel for the general public. So it’s safe, well lit, homey. Hope that helps….love, a local.

They take bed bug issues VERY SERIOUSLY down here! A lot of times it will result in the hotel completely closing down and doing a complete cleaning and sometimes a complete remodel.

Orlando takes it’s hotel business VERY SERIOUS! So please don’t worry!

I’m not a lawyer and I don’t know the exact legal recourse (I do think you might have to prove the managers had prior knowledge), but I know you can file complaints. I would file one with the board of health in that state and locality (talk to everybody you can), and I would also file with the Better Business Bureau. You won’t necessarily receive any restitution ($) for your pain and trouble, but it will hopefully force the hotel to clean up their act. At least it will bring them negative publicity. Also, please do an online review so that people like myself see these comments when they do a google search and don’t book a room at this nasty place!

This is a tough call and it would probably be easier to rule out the hotels which have ever been reported:

The Helmsley Park Lane Hotel New York – they once had a lawsuit some 2 years back for bedbugs
New York Inn, New York City, New York
    Eastgate Tower Hotel
Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers
    Carter Hotel New York City
    La Quinta Inn Manhattan
    Comfort Inn Manhattan
    Radisson Lexington Hotel New York
    Westin New York Times Square
    Latham Hotel
    Quality Hotel
    Paramount
    Belvedere Hotel
    Milford Plaza Hotel
    Edison Hotel
    W New York Court
    Flatotel
    Warwick Hotel
    Chelsea Lodge
    Warwick Hotel
    Park South

Certain NYC regions have also registered a number of reports:
    Riverside Drive
    Park Avenue

A good resource for these reports is: http://bedbugregistry.com

By the way the presence of bed bugs has got nothing to do with dirt, they spread easy and breed well even in clean hotels so don’t be fooled to thinking that a posh hotel may not have cases of bed bugs.

Ideally, I haven’t come across bedbug reports on Accommodations within LaGuardia and some are:

    Less than $100:
    – Laguardia Airport Hotel New York City
    – Holiday Inn Laguardia Airport New York City

    More than $100:
    – Holiday Inn Express Laguardia Airport…
    – Howard Johnson Hotel Laguardia Airport…
    – Fairfield Inn Laguardia Airport New…
    – Clarion Hotel La Guardia Airport New…
    – Lexington Marco Laguardia Hotel New…
    – Marriott Hotel Laguardia Airport New…
    – Hampton Inn Laguardia Airport New York…
    – Crowne Plaza Hotel Laguardia Airport…
    – Sheraton Hotel Laguardia East New York…

Now that you have an idea of where NOT TO GO, you can find a complete listing with all the hotel amenities, facilities, and even be able to compare rates at:

How can you decontaminate a mattress in a motel or hotel for bed bugs, scabies etc?
What legal action or recourse do you have if you stay at a motel and the managers know the mattresses are infested with bedbugs, etc and you are severely bitten?

Santa Cruz California hotels filled with bed bugs, theft, and rude service?
I am taking a little trip with a friend up to Santa Cruz for a few days this summer but it looks like all the hotel reviews are really really awful and frightening.
Does anyone with actual experience living or visiting Santa Cruz know of a decent and SAFE hotel for young girls to stay? I am looking to spend no more than $115 a night (hopefully less). If all of Santa Cruz is as disgusting as it looks in the reviews online, maybe a suggestion for a place in a nearby town?
    Thanks so much.

Best New York (Queens) hotels that are Bed Bugs FREE?
    Hi guys,

I understand NYC is pretty much infested with bed bugs and there are even lawsuits filed against hotels infested with those bugs.

I wouldn’t if I could, but I HAVE TO travel to NY for a business and need a hotel in Queens that is bed bugs free!

I understand this kind of infestation can happen to any hotel out there, but still like to hear opinions of some of you out there. There must be hotels that are more aware of this issue and take appropriate preventative action such as using a bed bug cover onto their mattresses etc.

BTW, I will arrive in the LaGuardia airport and hotels near the airport, or anywhere in Queens for that matter would work.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

Just booked a budget hotel and am concerned about bed bugs?
Have just booked a budget hotel in Rome and am a bit concerned after reading some reviews (for other hotels) about bed bugs. A common issue with budget hotels from what I gather, worldwide. The reviews for the hotel I booked did not mention anything of the kind but I am a bit antsy about it. If I shake out the sheets/towels and spray the room with common fly/ant spray, will it take care of any possible bed bugs? I know they can be quite small to the eye.
