Fantasy Football Strength of ...

Fantasy Football Drafting Etiquette

Author: Ryan Lester

Now that the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals are behind us, it is safe to start thinking about the NFL again.  If you are a fantasy football player, you may have never stopped following the league news.  The NFL has successfully made it a year-round league with the Free Agency, NFL Draft, OTAs, mini-camps, training camp, preseason, regular season, playoffs, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, and start it all over again.

As your dig deeper into your fantasy football research for the 2009 season you’ll begin to formulate opinions on certain players.  You’ll rank players by position as well as overall draft value.  Sometimes you’ll go with your gut expecting a particular guy to develop or another player to see a sharp decline.  Other times you’ll have two players with identical values so you’ll turn to strength of schedule, bye week, or fantasy playoff schedule to separate the two.  Whether you are going with a feeling or you have a formulated matrix to quantify the players, I urge you to avoid a practice that is becoming increasingly popular.

The practice I’m talking about is making fun of other players selections.  Just because you don’t think the pick is a wise one doesn’t mean that you are right.  Every year there are players taken early that don’t pan out.  Last year LaDainian Tomlinson, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Marion Barber III, Braylon Edwards, Marques Colston, Ryan Grant (to an extent), Jamal Lewis, Willis McGahee, Plaxico Burress, Chad Ochocinco, Torry Holt, Larry Johnson, Reggie Bush, Carson Palmer, and Darren McFadden failed to meet expectations.  The list goes on, but you catch my drift.  Unless you can see the future, don’t ridicule someone for taking a reach.  I understand that part of the fun is heckling your peers, but there is a line when the heckling becomes you peacocking to show how much  you know about fantasy football.  I urge you not to cross that line

Another practice that I would like to see go away is name dropping.  There are fantasy owners who will drop the names of available players just to gauge reactions.  Then the owner in question will make their decision based on that reaction.  Another problem comes up if it’s not even your turn.  There isn’t anything more frustrating than being a couple of picks away and somebody names the guy you’re targeting.  There is no telling whether or not that player would have slid to you, but it’s frustrating when someone takes him before your pick.  If it’s a recurring problem each year with a particular owner, I have no problem with either enforcing a rule in which case if you name someone, you get him as your pick if he’s available at your turn or eventually replacing that owner.  It’s a fine line because it’s fun to discuss players, but you don’t want create disharmony at the same time.

Finally, pay attention to the players being drafted.  I can excuse trying to select a drafted player a time or two, but if every other wrong the league is saying “he’s taken” to you, it gets frustrating.  Do yourself a favor and write down the picks and cross off the players as they are selected.  If these practices are followed, you’ll have a much smoother, successful fantasy football draft.

I look at strength of schedule, Young was not drafted in my 10 team league, I would hold off on him till a little later 5th or 6th round. Good luck!

    1-Chicago. young and fast

2-New England. Lots of off season moves

    3- Baltimore. getting old

4-San Diego. if they dont get caught for steroids they are good

5-Miami. Maybe a tie with San diego but Joey Porter will be reborn there

6- Minnesota. come on they have no one but darren sharper, watch for their rival the packers especially in a keeper league

    your team’s pretty solid.
i like a lot of TEs over Celek, but it could pay off if you think he’ll do that well.
as far as a sleeper WR… watch the titans. you already have justin gage, so watch to see if nate washington or kenny britt would be worth picking up instead. one of the three will become a fantasy starter later in the year, we just have to see who kerry collins goes to.
also, carney might night even start all year, so keep an eye on him, but as long as he’s playing he should put up some good numbers.

    Fantasy football-bears or ravens defense?
According to defensive strength of schedule, the athletes on the roster, and any other factor which team will have th ebest defense fantasy-wise? Will it be…

    Chicago
    Baltimore
    Minnesota
    New England
    San Diego
    Miami

Actually put theses defenses in order of which will have the best fantasy season. and write explanations of why. Right now i have the bears defense on my team but im thinking of trading to get the bears defense.

How much do you rely on strength of schedule while drafting for fantasy football?
    For Example..
Denver has the easiest schedule for RB”s would this mean Selvin Young is worth taking in the mid to late 1st and/or2nd round of the draft?

If not the most important what is most important to you? I am in a 12 man H2H league.
I am only using Selvin Young as an example and no way would I take him in rnd 1 or 2.

Rate my Fantasy Football Team from 1-10?
    QB- Philip Rivers
    RB- Deangelo Williams
    RB- Brandon Jacobs
    WR-Eddie Royal
    WR-Jericho Cotchery
    WR-Steve Breaston
    TE- Brent Celek
    K- John Carney
    DST- Steelers
    Reserve- Joe Flacco
    Reserve- Derrick Ward
    Reserve- Rashard Mendenhall
    Reserve- Devery Henderson
    Reserve- Justin Gage

I think Eddie Royal will be coming up on a big year this year, hopefully orton will be supplying him touchdowns but i doubt it, still, i think he will be big on his reception’s and yards.

Brent Celek is my sleeper pick…. Not much people know about him but he might be a top 3 TE contributer this year.

Kicker John Carney should have an awesome first games with the NO saints offense, i predict him giving me 10+ points per game…

Steelers Defense- Need I say more?? With a strength of schedule being top 5 easiest, I had to snatch them up first…..

Deangelo Williams- Top RB last year for fantasy, can he repeat it? I sure hope so, with Johnathan Stewart still hurt with “ongoing achilles pain”, he might have monster games start of the season…. Johnathan Stewart’s injury is starting to seem serious because he has not even started practicing with the team yet the whole summer!!!! hmm…

Brandon Jacobs- Will always be a top contributor for touchdown’s in the RB position. This year might be a big year for him… gut feeling…

Philip Rivers- Another Big year for one of the highest rated quarterbacks.. With LT and Darren Sproles being good with reception’s, he will be throwing bomb’s into the redzone.. believe that…..

Tell me what you all think on these players… I know im weak on the recieving corps, so hopefully i can find a good sleeper off the waiver wire… i was thinking joey galloway from NE patriots???? what you guys think?? Randy Moss and Wes Welker will definitely be cover by the better cornerbacks… And Galloway(even if he is 38) still has the speed to break away for some really big play’s.. I used to have Chris Henry but traded him for Steve Breaston, im starting to think i messed up on that one because henry was a redzone killer during preseason….
