Fantasy Football Strategy

Author: Onesimus Smith

Fantasy Football is a huge spectacle online. Millions of people from around the world log on to manage their teams nearly every day. There are some rather simple tips that you can implement into your fantasy football strategy that will allow  you to have a very successful team.

The most basic fantasy football strategy that is being overlooked today is the match ups. No other fantasy sport other than football is as reliant on match ups. A good fantasy player can be a great player when going against a below average defense.

In order to maximize your fantasy football output, start with players going against terrible defenses. Thorough evaluation of match ups must be conducted every week while you decide whether to sit or play a particular player. I recommend going to NFL.com to check each defense rankings in passing yards and rushing yards that are allowed. While the defensive match-up are not the only factor going into your start/sit decision it is certainly one of the most important.

In order to decide on a receiver to pick up off waivers as a bye week fill-in, you should first look for receivers on home teams coming off a bye. Thefantasy football strategy for this is to observe the value of playing the receivers and quarterbacks that are coming off a bye that is something to be exploited if possible. You can visit NFL.com and sort defenses based on the passing yards allowed. Try to go by defensive match ups if there are only few free agents available in you leagues.

A match-up is a fantasy football strategy that is crucial to indentifying players looking to take it to the next level. The fact is that in the NFL, you just don't know what is going to happen each game. It should never be used to decide whether to bench a player or not. However, it is essential to look at when you decide between similarly ranked mid-tier players and especially for looking at bye week fill-ins. At www.fantasyfactor.com you can play their state of the art software and amazing one dayfantasy leagues for Fantasy football, Fantasy Baseball, Fantasy Basketball and many other fantasy sports.

A lot depends on where you end up picking in your draft and who is available when you pick. In a typical snake draft I watch for trends if I am pickeing near the middle, if I am picking early then I target the best 2 RBs available and if I am picking very late in the first round I might be inclined to draft RB in the first then jumping on a guy like Brees or Brady with my second pick. I know it will be a long time before the draft comes back to me if I am picking late and the odds that the QB run dries up before I get a shot later isnt worth risking. Draft strategy depends on so many factors like drft position and positional runs that you need to identify guys you want and make sure you draft for value. Dont grab a guy you really like early because the guys who stay within the value range are almost always the guys who are there at the end….once you draft one guy too early that sets your whole team back because you can never replace that value. And like an earlier post said, identify potential breakout players and grab them in the later rounds but do this on the premise of drafting where you feel you might be a little weak.

    Sounds awful.

Focus on a key stud for Kicker? What round are you going to draft your “stud” kicker? If it’s early than the next to last round, it’s a mistake. And how exactly do you “focus” on a kicker or defense? You are drafting your RBs, QB’s and WR before a defense anyway.

And why wouldn’t you simply try to have as many studs as possible?

You make it sound like you want to draft a kicker and defense before your wide receivers. Please join my leagues if you are going to do that… but bring your money ahead of time.

Ok, for me, I’ve been in this position so many times. When it is your pick, look at who has been drafted before you. Usually it will be alot of RB’s, so pick a good RB. Then, pick a QB. Many will say that is stupid, but think of it like this: After your two picks, your not going to be able to pick for another twenty picks. That means, that all of the good QB’s will probably be gone. So, pick a good RB, then QB. When it comes back to you, pick another RB, and then a top WR.

This type of format changes things greatly. You have some great possession receivers who are valuable at the goal line but never put up 150 yards and 8 catches. You also need your QB to be the type to pass or run for lots of TD’s and probably the most valuable player is your RB. Look at Pittsburgh from 2 years ago, you wouldn’t take Bettis over Parker in a normal league but in your’s you would, because he gets the ball at the goal line. Gates and Shockey for great TE who get the ball never the goal. LT is the best overall pick of course and Manning as a QB since he throws so many passes for TD’s.

Ok, so if you’re in a 10 person league, this means you get 19 and also 22 right after that. So what I’d do is grab whichever top 5 RB you want (I’d take Turner, even at #1) and then see how the draft goes. At 19, Chances are the top 2 WRs and QBs will be gone (Fitz, Andre J, Brees and Brady, who I think is insanely overranked at the moment). If so, I’d grab the next best RB on the board at 19 and then at 22 see how the WR/QB stuff is shaking out. If any of the top 5-6 WRs are available, I’d take them over a QB and then shoot for a QB at the next pick.

The only deviation from this, imo, would be at 19 if Brees is still available. If so, I’d take him, because I think there’s a fairly big gap after him with a bunch of guys sort of lumped together. There’s not going to be that much difference between Manning, Rivers, Rodgers, Ryan and Warner when all is said and done, and if there is, there’s no way to tell right now. Each comes with risk of one sort or another – Brees does not.

How does touchdown-only rules change your fantasy football strategy?
I’m joining a FF league this year for a fair amount of cash. I’m fairly experienced with the scoring format of ESPN.com, with a 10 player league, but this new league is 16 players and you only get points for touchdowns (6 for rushing/receiving or defensive touchdown, 4 for passing, plus 3 for field goal, 1 for extra point). That’s it, and I’m guaranteed to be randomly one of the first 8 in the draft.

What strategies do you suggest? I’d love lists of top players.

Any general tips on how this format changes the strategy?

What is the better fantasy football strategy?
I know this may be a little premature, but I was wondering what the better drafting strategy for fantasy football is. Should I go QB or RB first?

What should be my fantasy football strategy?
Unfortantely I wound up last (10th) in my league of 10 teams. So I will have the last pick of the 1st round and then the first pick(11th) in the 2nd round and so on. What should be my strategy… RB first? QB? WR?

What should my fantasy football strategy be?
I have the second overall pick in the first round. And then the 19th pick overall in the 2 round.

How is this fantasy football strategy?
I feel that key positons are the ones you focus on. Focus on key studs for QB Kicker, Defense and one Running back

Have a 2nd solid but not stud running back and shuffle recievers that are so so each week. How is that strategy.
