Tips for Fantasy Football Management: How to Plan Your Strategy for the 2009 NFL Season

Author: Marcus Whittman

Fantasy football is a hobby for some and an obsession for others.  If you are a sports fanatic, fantasy sports in general offers an interactive format for where your expert knowledge of any game can be put to use and even lead to cash prizes. Fantasy football is the most popular fantasy sport online to date and fantasy football diehards often engage in multiple fantasy football leagues.  Management of multiple fantasy football teams can be a lot of work when each team requires its own strategy and each fantasy sports web site requires attention and involvement. Here are some tips for putting a fantasy football management plan in place.  The more intentional and organized you are the more likely you are to win in the end.

Fantasy Football Management Tips: Kick Butt This Season!

Tip 1: Choose the Fantasy Football Web Sites You Enjoy the Most

There are many options when it comes to playing fantasy football.  Free and paid fantasy football web sites offer specific advantages and disadvantages. Most fantasy football fanatics are members of multiple fantasy football web sites, which can be overwhelming. Make a list of the web sites you enjoy most and focus on them this year.  If your goal is to win big then choose sites with hefty cash prizes. If you play fantasy football for the love of the game then choose a site that provides member benefits you believe are valuable and has a format that includes plenty of NFL news and player information.

If you are really serious about fantasy football, enjoy strategizing and like to win then choose at least one paid fantasy football web site with a tough, competitive challenge.  At the end of the day you can play in as many leagues and on as many web sites as you like, but most seasoned players know paid fantasy football sites are where the high stakes, thrill of the game and difficult competition are. Free sites are recommended as a complement to paid adventures and great introductions for any fantasy football newbies.

Tip 2: Don’t Split Your Football Loyalty

Oftentimes, for the seasoned fantasy football diehard, it can be difficult when your favorite football team is playing, while, at the same time your fantasy football team is competing for hard cash. Don’t split your loyalty! Decide from the beginning what your top priorities are. If being number 1 in fantasy football is a top priority then root for your fantasy team and hopefully you will end up celebrating your success. If you know your heart lies with a team you have followed since childhood, then simply take a break and focus on watching your favorite team.

Tip 3: Invite More Friends to Join You in Your Fantasy Football Efforts

Fantasy sports of all kinds get more interesting and more challenging when you play alongside other people. Invite your family members, close friends, work colleagues and anyone else that loves sports to take a chance at fantasy football. If they are already involved in a league ask them to join a site with you or consider joining theirs.

Tip 4: Keep Up to Date on NFL News and Expert Opinions from Varying Sources

Every fantasy football diehard has a favorite news source and commentator.  Whether it is TV, radio, the Internet or a magazine, credible resources are valuable and should be consulted. However, it is important to listen to varying opinions.  Sports, like life, can often surprise you. Stay up to date on all of the latest rumors and news through fantasy football forums, blogs and podcasts. This way your fantasy football strategies are based on your well-rounded, carefully developed opinions. The more you know, the more of a chance there is that you will achieve great fantasy football success.

Tip 5: To Win Big Trust Your Fantasy Football Expertise and Instincts

Regardless of how knowledgeable or experienced you are, there are no guarantees in fantasy football. The best way to execute fantasy football strategies is to combine your intelligence with your instincts. Expertise mixed with gut instinct is what you need to prove you are the best! Trust your mind and heart to help you put together the strongest fantasy football team and win.

If you follow these basic fantasy football management tips you will see your game improve as well as your fantasy football experience. Don’t just play fantasy football, live it!

    nflnhlgolf,

You are correct that the best (and most fair) way to administer the waiver-wire process is to revert the processing until Tuesday morning. The problem with making it any sooner is just the reason you stated: that someone could sit by their computer all day and grab-up good deals.

I for one have season tickets so I don’t get back home until Sunday evenings, so should someone who is able to watch the games at home have an advantage over me? Of course not. The only fair way to administer the system is by scheduling the waiver processing and letting teams queue their rested moves.

In addition to being more fair, moving the waiver-wire start to Tuesday also adds an element of strategy. Sometimes it may pay to not make a waiver request so as to move up in the waiver priority in subsequent weeks. Tuesday also works well because it gives all teams a chance to witness the Monday Night Football game and plan accordingly.

I’m not sure which fantasy football hosting service you use, but almost all of them have a setting for changing the day on which the waiver requests are processed. Usually this setting is limited to days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. Just have a thoroughly look through your commissioner tools and you should be able to find it.

    Good luck in your league.

Ok, let’s see if we can break this down without it getting to be too long an email. Most people will tell you to get RB’s first because they are so hard to come by. I’m guessing you didn’t do that, because of who you have. However, you have the consensus #3 QB, #1 WR and #1 D player in Patrick Willis.

I would give your QB’s an A Romo is easily #3 behind Brady and Manning and could possibly beat out either of them. Garrard is reliable, but I can’t see any reason to use him except on a bye-week because he never seems to have remarkable games. I wouldn’t expect anything out of Tavarius Jackson even with his upgraded receivers

WR you are stacked, A. With Moss and Wayne you have 2 top 10 guys and Holmes isn’t far behind and definitely in the top 20. I had Vincent Jackson last year and he was very inconsistent, especially when Chambers arrived in SD. I don’t know much about DeSean Jackson or Hardy. I might try to find a better #4 guy to use on bye weeks, but most weeks you’ll be set.

RB – C. Graham could be great, especially if he does what he did last year after Cadillac went down, but Williams could come back and take time from him. I’ve got him this year and he worries me. If he keeps the job and plays like the end of last year, he’ll be fine. Young could be great in Denver because every back there does well. He just needs to keep the starting job and get the bulk of the carries. Perry is a steal, and somoene I would start over MendenHall especially now that the Bengals cut Rudi. I think Willie Parker is still going to see significant time in PIT and possibly goal line touches this year as well, so I think Perry is the safer play. Thomas could be a great pick depending in the health of McAllister, but will always share with Reggie Bush. Steve Slayton, I’ve never even heard of. So you don’t have a cornerstone guy like the big names, but an average set of guys who should keep you cometitive with your other skill positions.

TE – B Crumpler is above average, but he’s no Jason Witten. We’ll see if the move to TEN picks up his stats or not. Could be a great value pick.

You don’t have a kicker…..I guess you don’t use those.

You’re D is solid, depending on the scoring system. O.J. Atogwe ought to be in the field a lot for the Rams…(I’m from St. Louis, so just a guess there) The rest of the guys are good, but it’s hard to know what free agents are out there with D. From my first year in an IDP league last year it seems like week to week is hit or miss with guys. Unless you know you’re guys are going to be around the ball a ton, you never know how many tackles they are going to get. One thought, if no one has Paul Poszulny from BUF at LB you might look at him, he was all over the ball last year the first couple of games till he broke his arm with a ton of tackles. I was disappointed I missed out on him this year.

Overall, I’d say B. You should be highly competative in your league and maybe compete for the title depending on how your RB situation shakes out.

Pretty good at player projections (more consistent than Yahoo, who is terrible at projections) and quick updates on injury reports.

    Fantasy Football?
There is a website that is currently under construction so you can’t access it right now, but when it’s done it’s supposed to have like blogs, surveys, raffles to win prizes, news and a lot more all for NFL. There is also going to be fantasy sports where you can pay to get access to play. I think the cost is around 20 bucks to play but if you win you get a lot of money. There are going to be a lot of leagues. I think it sounds cool and it’s a good way to get money. My question is would you sign up for a site to see all this cool stuff like blogs and news and stuff and pay for fantasy sports for a chance to get money? I am going to do it because I think I could win, but would other people do it or is too expensive or what? Please answer and I will give best answers. Once again it’s under construction and is supposed to be ready like on monday but here is the site. It’s http://www.officialnflsite.com… Thanks.

Football fans, once the draft is over, and training camp not starting until August, how will you make it?
through until August? I know we’ll all be debating our draft picks on here, checking out the blogs, and running mock fantasy drafts, but how else will try to make it? Once March Madness is over, this is always the WORST part of the year.

    Fantasy football waiver wire question?
In all of experts blogs I hear about all the waiver wire studs they’ve lost or won on Tuesday. This is my second year of commishing, and last year players could be picked up on mid-Sunday and Monday. How can I make it be so Tuesday is the waiver wire free for all like they say. Because if your stuck to your computer all day you could get a hurt player’s back up first, and i dont want that to happen.
