Getting Rid Of Bed Bugs

Author: Paula Tooney

We all need a good night's sleep. But if you can not enjoy your night, it may be because you wake up at night scratching. You wake up the next morning and you're covered with spots. You have a problem and this problem is called "bed bugs". But what are bed bugs? Are they mites? And how to get rid of it? This article gives you the answer.

What is a bed bug?

The bed bug is a parasite of humans. Its Latin name is Cimex lectularius. Its shape is oval and its dominant color is red-brown. It has a size of 4 to 8 millimeters and is wingless. It is smaller than a ladybug. It is quite flat (about 1 millimeter thick), which explains how it can sneak in some places and be almost invisible. Indeed, it loves hiding in floors, seams of mattresses, on wallpapers, skirting boards, and so on. It does not like light and bites mainly at night.

The female can lay two eggs per day and up to 200 in total. She sticks to a surface, so that when they hatch after three weeks, they are near a food source.

And, important point, a bed bug is not a mite. Mites are present in all mattresses. These are 'normal' insects, in such sense that they are always present, as their presence is natural, and they are not harmful. Unless you have a specific allergy to them, mites do not cause problems or diseases.

On the contrary, bed bugs can be a real plague. They are often nicknamed "vampires". They stay hidden all day long and come out only at night. They feed on human blood. They can also transmit diseases, and this is why they must be considered dangerous.

How to get rid of bed bugs?

Bed bugs are insects that are very difficult to eradicate. They proliferate normally in the slums or on badly maintained premises, but it is also possible to have them in your home by cross-contamination. Bed bugs spread from one house to another, either directly on individuals, either when moving furniture, or simply with some piece of luggage.

To eliminate bed bugs, it is not enough to just clean the mattress. It must be treated with insecticide and wrapped in a fully waterproof cover. What makes them more difficult to get rid of is that bedbugs can live for several months without eating, so even if you wrap your mattress well, they will still be there, waiting patiently for the next victim in the mattress.

This is why your best bet will be to get rid of your mattress and clean your house thoroughly. You should make sure to treat all places where bugs can hide and lay, with all the necessary precautions, using chemical insecticide sprays.

If you can afford it, it is far better to contract the services of a specialized company. Before their intervention, you must clean up all the clothes in boiling water and place them in tightly sealed plastic bags. Nothing should enable the insects to get through. Pillows and blankets will often be disposed of – you might want to check this with the company. All carpets and curtains must be cleaned, as well as walls and floors.

Other insects that are wingless and live off of our human blood are head lice. They are well-known of school aged children and their families. Unlike bed bugs, they lice exclusively on our scalp, but just like bed bugs, getting rid of head lice can sometimes be a real headache.

I don’t think you have lice or bed bugs, you can catch it from trying on hats. Have your mom look and see if there are any lice on your head, there would be tiny little eggs attached to your hair at the nape of the neck. If you did have lice you would need to get RID shampoo, which is sold at the pharmacy. It will kill it. Sweating and not washing your hair won’t get rid of lice.

You could be itchy because your worried about it.

    I hope this helps

Could be a bedbugs. They are about the size of a grain of rice and after tehy have fed, they are reddish brown in colour.

You will want to try to find a good PCO to start a treatment and you will also want to check out some of the chemical free treatments available online at website like http://www.kleen-free.com as thsi si something you cna apply safely on yoru own. The non-chemical stuff is generally a contact spray so it will only kill/control what it hits but it is nice to have on hand since some bedbugs are becooming chemical resistent.

    Good luck.

lice actually like to live on clean heads.

Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on the human scalp (clean heads usually). They are about as big as sesame seeds. Head lice sustain themselves by sucking blood – just as mosquitoes do. However, unlike mosquitoes, lice cannot fly or jump from one person to another; they can only crawl. Children often get head lice from head-to-head contact with other children, but may also get them by sharing personal items such as hats, combs, or headbands.

Eggs are laid by the female louse. They are about the size of a poppy seed and are difficult to see because their color easily blends in with the infested child’s hair. Eggs are laid near the root of the hair and are attached with a waterproof, glue-like substance that can’t be washed or blown away.

Nits are the empty eggshells left behind when lice hatch from eggs. Dandruff, sand and flakes of hairspray are commonly mistaken for eggs or nits. Eggs & nits are not easily removed and must be carefully combed out with a fine-toothed comb.

Nits vary in color – from yellowish-brown to white. Since the hair grows, nits are usually found further away from the root of the hair. Many schools have a “No Nit Policy,” which means children who have had head lice are not readmitted to school until all the nits are gone. If your child has head lice, it is very important to comb out eggs & nits as part of the lice elimination process.

live for approximately 40-50 days and go through 3 stages in their life cycle:

Egg Stage: The female louse lays the egg with a special glue that cements it to the hair shaft near the root. The eggs develop and hatch approximately 10 days later.

Nymph Stage: Once the louse hatches, it is called a nymph and is barely visible to the naked eye. The nymph cannot reproduce because it is not fully developed. After about 12 days, it becomes an adult.

Adult Stage: The adult louse can lay up to 4-10 eggs a day – starting another generation of lice. The adult stage lasts about 28 days.

Now that you know the basics about head lice, this section will help you understand how you can successfully go through the treatment, complete elimination and removal of head lice, eggs and nits from your family and home!

Moms who have gone through this experience often feel confused and helpless. However, complete lice elimination doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Successful treatment becomes simpler once you understand the steps you need to take.

Could it be bed bugs?? Lice?? What??
Well, about two, three weeks ago, my scalp started to itch like mad. Well, I’ve had lice before and such, so I checked my scalp to see if there were any eggs, and all I say was dried shampoo and dandruff. But, I’ve also been noticing some bites on my scalp, shoulders, and everywhere else on my body. At my friend’s house the other day, I noticed that there was a dark, and I mean dark red bug on my face. I looked at it, and it didn’t look like a louse to me at all, I mean, I had lice about 10 years ago for a loooong time, so I became an expert I’d say about them, and it looked nothing like it. Also, I doubt it’s lice cause I’ve stayed at my boyfriend’s house a few times over the week, and he hasn’t had an itchy scalp or anything.

My question is, what is it?? Is it a bed bugs?? What is it??

    Lice? Bed Bugs? Bug Infestation.?
For the past couple days I have been finding these tiny little bugs (about the size of a grain of sand) crawling on my skin. I find most of them on my arms. I have also been noticing that I have a lot of bites (smaller than mosquito bites though) on myself. What are these bugs and how do I get rid of them? Are they lice? I havent found any on my head though. Are they bed bugs? Help!!

Can anyone who had lice or bed bugs tell me what they look like? like description and size and everythign?
Like i saw this black little bug it was narrow like
    thin
i dont know if its flat or not
it was longish like maybe 1.5-2 milimeters…
and it was going at a normal speed
it was on my bed sheet…. but i didnt get to catch it

SO if you had it or saw it before, is it possible for a bed bug to be narrow like?
And i didnt really get to see the legs cause it was tiny
and for lice aer you supposed to see legs poping out a lot or for bed bugs?
    plus it was wingless…
im getting creeped out since i heard bed bugs are hard to get rid off and see!! T_T
