Bed Bug Repellent

Bed Bug Faqs
Author: Sammi Jonesman
Bed bugs are very small insects that feed off of the blood of humans and warm blooded animals. Depending on their stage of development they range in color from off white to brown. They are about the size of a pen head. They can live anywhere they find a host to feed on.
Cleanliness does not have a lot to do with where they live; it will however slow down their infestation once they have arrived.
Crawling is the only way they can bed bugs can get from one place to the next. They cannot jump or fly. They will catch rides on ones clothing, in luggage cases, and in furniture.
Bed bugs live close to where people frequent. In your home they will be close to where you sleep; your bed, armchair, coach, and cribs. They sleep in the cracks of the furniture, cracks in walls, wall receptacles, in our baseboards, and under mattresses.
Determining rather you have these insects in your home is done with a flashlight and magnifying glass at night when they are out walking around. You may also find small blood spots, which is their poop. They also shed their skin from time to time so you may locate them as you search.
Reducing room clutter is the first thing to be done when trying to get rid of bed bugs The next thing to do is get out the vacuum and clean till you have every nook and cranny cleaned. You should also take off your mattress and get around the headboard. If they are around your couch, remove the cushions and clean down in the cracks. As soon as you are done with each time of vacuuming, remove the vacuum bag, put in inside a plastic bag, tie it up tight and take outside to the dumpster.
Bedbugs are a pest that must have continues cleaning to be eradicated from your home.

I’ve always used vanilla extract. It actually works and bugs can’t stand the smell of vanilla. Another one that works is peppermint oil (look in your baking/spice aisle at your grocery).
Products like Avon are not natural at all (and it doesn’t work, I’ve tried it) and citronella oil is NOT meant to be put on skin but burned in candles or set out as a repellent in the air, but not on skin.

You will definitely need a professional exterminator for bedbugs. These are persistent pests, and nothing that the homeowner can purchase in a store can rid your house of them. He will also be able to give you advice on maintaining a bug-free environment.

Forever yours,
I am not aware of any homemade repellents that will work. They will likely only allow the bedbugs even more time to make the infestation worse than it is now.
You may eventually need an exterminator but they are quite costly and may not work in the end. If you are trying to save money, maybe go the do it yourself route with something that does work.
Some have had success with using do it yourself sprays that will kill bedbugs on contact but these require patience and persistence. If this is the route you want to take, the one that I have seen work is called BedBug Terminator and it is made by a company called Kleen-Free and sold online. This one is chemical free so it is okay for you to spray it and still be in the apartment or house and it is okay to spray on and around mattresses and still lie on them.
It will kill the bedbugs on contact as well as kill their eggs which is important. You spray it everywhere that the bugs are and where they may be and eventually you should be able to get rid of them.
Good luck and choose the right solution for you.

this and several other sites that I’ve seen say that the ‘repellant’ stuff doesn’t work against them….

Natural bug repellent for toddler at night?
My son keeps getting bug bites while sleeping. These are not bed bugs. We have a plastic mattress and wash blankets in hot water. I think they are just little mosquitos but is there something I can put on his skin before bed that will repel the bugs and stop them from biting him? Something all natural?

Does anyone know of a home made Bed Bug repellent?
I know that taking a bath with two cupfuls of Clorox, repels mosquitoes, but it did nothing for the bed bugs.

Is there something that you can apply to your skin so bed bugs will not bite?
Just curious if there is some kind of bed bug repellent that you can put on your skin.
