Do bed bugs carry disesase?

Author: Nadeeka Johnson

Although bed bugs can harbor pathogens in their bodies, there are currently no documented cases of bed bugs transmitting any diseases to humans at this time. However, lab tests have found that bed bugs can carry the causative agents for anthrax, plague, typhus, tularemia, yellow fever and numerous other blood infesting disease organisms.

Bed bugs are making a comeback nationwide and the pest control industry is seeking new technologies to combat the increasingly pesticide-resistant insects. Cutting-edge technologies at both ends of the temperature spectrum include Cryonite which uses a non-toxic carbon dioxide snow to instantly freeze and kill the noxious pests and giant infrared heaters that raise the temperature in a room and bake the bugs to death. The University of Minnesota is working on a trap that simulates a sleeping human, the bed bug's favorite meal.

Perhaps the most popular weapon in the bed bug-fighting arsenal – possibly because of its sloppy kisses and wagging tail – is the dog. Dogs, which have been trained to sniff out weapons, arson, drugs, missing persons, termites and cancer, are now being trained to detect and pinpoint bed bugs and their eggs, helping exterminators target treatment areas.

The average dog has 200 to 250 million scent receptors in its nose. Its nasal membranes cover seven square meters. In comparison, human nasal membranes cover barely half a meter and contain only 5 million receptors. A dog's scenting ability is so sensitive it can smell things that can't be detected by the most sensitive scientific instruments. Depending on the dog and its training, a dog's sensitivity to odors is 10 to 100 times greater than man's.

    Hello,

Actually i have had a bed infestation.

I know my remedy might sounds ridiculous but it actually works.

Try and buy or borrow a heater gun, you know the ones used to melt plastic or rubber to stick stuff together, now keep in mind that this must be done by an adult this is not for children to play with.

Once you have this use it to basically steam clean all the furniture where the infestation resides, every little crack bent or hole everywhere. this will kill live bed bugs and also their eggs.
Second, If you have a spring box this most likely is filled with them i try to cleaned myself but in the end i had to discard it.
Third buy plastic bags for your mattress and pillows, I prefer to put 2 just in case.

Next is to access your living space.
First do you have a carpeted floor?
If you do let me tell you things are much more complicated. to find out if the infestation is local, this is what i can suggest. Place glue traps, yes those for insects and mice, near where you sleep, near the corners where the wall meets the carpet and of course at the legs of your bed, since they will try to climb to get to you.

This will give you an idea if the infestation was local to your, if the next morning you find bed bugs on the traps then your problem might not be solvable by trying to fumigate.

Does the carpeting have padding if it does then the bed bugs are below that padding layers and the chemical you or your exterminator put will not do anything, the only choice is to rip the area apart , I know it sounds harsh but it is the truth.

The other option which I recommend not to take just because it is dangerous is to use rubbing alcohol, it is a very volatile substance so if you know that you have pinpointed where the infestation is coming from then spray that over them it takes about 10 seconds and the alcohol kills all the live bed bugs i can’t know for sure about the eggs, because i did this for 10 consecutive days so any eggs that hatched died right away.

Please this is not a joke the infestation of bed bugs is really serious and the measures against them maybe worse, what i told is my personal experience and how i dealt with the infestation. If someone tries this please do so with much care specially if you try to use rubbing alcohol wear protective gear such as masks and this should only be done by adults.

fumigations and bombs do not work trust me, the reduce the numbers so that it looks like it worked but they will reproduce again and keep coming back

Forget this, just spray your dog and the bed with a kind and harmless solution. I have trained dogs forever, thankfully there have never been fleas or bed bugs in my house. Nevertheless I cannot imagine how I would train a dog to detect bed bugs.

Instead try using a kind and harmless solution to prevent fleas. There are lots of treatments for killing and preventing fleas, they are full of nasty chemicals and they are expensive. I make up a solution for my dogs which prevents fleas, although it is also said to kill fleas I have no experience of this because my dogs have never had fleas. Also ticks die on arrival. .

Use a few drops of Citricidal and essential oils of Citronella, Tea Tree and Lavender. Add this to half a pint of vinegar or water and sponge a small amount onto your dog’s coat. I use this every week.

    Entire building MUST be treated.
She needs to remove all bedding, mattresses, furniture, clothing.
Should read up on this. Very difficult to eradicate.
Bedbugs are NOT caused by LLs, but by tenants, brought in by tenants. And if she moves, she’ll likely take them with her.

    yes, vacuum them very well
place them in plastic bags (maybe large ziplock bags)
bed bugs can live up to a year without feeding.. so if you can live without your books for 1 year keep them in the bags after vacuuming

    Are these bed bug bites?
I had a bed bug infestation and then I had 2 exterminators come and used a do-it-yourself kit and im still getting bites. There are no signs of bed bugs and my mattress is all covered up and there is freaking bed bug killing powder around my bed. But im still getting bit. Some of them look like mosquito bites but like two of them look like bed bug bites. I have only been bitten 4 times since the last exterminator came 3 days ago

    Landlord/Tenant laws abt. bug infestations?
Friend’s place infested w/ bed bugs.. Landlord came out with a do it yourself kit & sprayed days ago, it didn’t help because they are coming from the other side of the duplex where there is obviously a lot of bug activity. She was wondering in the state of FL what the laws are, her landlord is telling her to call out an exterminator which she can NOT afford (she has 3 kids – 1 disabled) and they are making their life a nightmare. She’s finding bed bugs in their clothes and shoes. She’s on a very limited income and her landlord doesn’t care that his property is becoming infested. Any suggestions?
She’s already treated her side of the duplex, bought mattress covers.. etc.. but they keep coming back and now the landlord is “washing his hands of it” claiming he’s done his part. (But bugs still there!)

I want to train my dog to detect bed bugs. Where can I find a kit to teach him?

This is infact a real question. I don’t need him to find bed bugs in my house. But I want to train him to find them so I can take him to hotels. Same type of training for a narcotics dog. I just cannot seem to find a kit to lay the scent.

How do I get rid of Bed Bugs in my Books?
We have a really bad infestation, and I ordered an extermination kit (we can’t afford to hire an exterminator, but this kit has everything we need) Anyway, I don’t know if it’s specific yet as how to get rid of the buggers in my books. I know they are there, and I don’t want to throw them out, and I don’t have enough time or freezer room to try and freeze them all. The kit is going to come with a powder(pyrethrin), insecticide and a IGF concentrate as well as a spot treatment insecticide (both insecticides are in sprays). Any suggestions on how to get rid of them with or without these?
