Why You Should Buy Your Gifts Online

By admin On July 6, 2010 Under food and wine

It can sometimes be difficult to buy a nice gift for someone on a special occasion. Especially for relatives; every year on average you will buy a family member 2 gifts, as the years go by you start to run out of ideas. I especially find it hard to know what to buy for my Mum on her birthday and, often I don't get to see her because she lives a long way away in Spain.

My Mum is a fairly contented lady; she enjoys her life and on the whole doesn't want for much which makes it even more difficult to get her a gift that she would really enjoy. The good news is, we live in a time where there has never been so much out there to choose from, and the Internet plays an integral part of not only choosing a gift (you can get so many good ideas by looking at any of the many ‘Gift Idea' sites) but you can also buy, and easily deliver a gift direct to the recipient.

Now I have so much to choose from! I don't think I could ever again bring myself to walk around a crowded shopping centre on December anyth to get last minute gifts that no one will really want just because it's the only thing left in the shop.

Some of my favourite gifts over the last couple of years (both given and received) have come from the Internet. The key to getting something great is to really think about the sort of gift you would like to give. I like my gifts to be thoughtful so I try to think about a person's interests, skills and favourite things when I'm thinking of what I could get them.

Some of the gifts that were very well received were:

Music: For my best friend' birthday I decided to put together a CD of all the songs which remind me of her. I thought of the idea a few years ago but most of the songs I wanted I didn't have, and you couldn't get them all together on a pre-made CD (lots of different genres over the span of several years) so short of going out and buying around 20 albums in order to put together my compilation, it wasn't going to happen.

Enter iTunes. I was able to download iTunes for free, find the songs I wanted and buy them then and there. Once I had them I created a CD and she was really chuffed with it.

Experiences: While searching around for a gift for my Dad, I came across various gift experience sites. I'd heard of red letter day from years ago but didn't realise the amount of different companies that were now around. I came up with a great idea for a gift.... for ME! I'd always wanted to go bungee jumping but never got round to it... My Mum also complains that she doesn't know what to buy for me for birthdays and Christmas so I sent her a link to a site I found offering bungee jumps for less than £50!

On my birthday I received a gift voucher and went and did my bungee jump which was truly amazing! Literally the best gift I ever got!

Flowers: When I was younger I thought that giving flowers was a bit of a cop out, something you don't have to put much thought into. Over the years though I've come to realise that there are ways to make a gift of flowers more thoughtful. You can ensure that you get someone's favourite flowers but also still paying attention to the fillers as well. I designed my Mum's Mother's day Bouquet online and sending flowers abroad is so easy! She got them dead on time and she said they were so fresh and lasted ages.

Although I do for most Mother's days, I don't often give flowers for things like birthdays... I prefer to send someone flowers when there is no real occasion at all. When someone has been there for you or gone out of their way to help you and just generally be a great friend, sending them flowers when they don't expect it can really make someone's day!

Personalised Gifts: There are so many personalised gift ideas on the Internet, most of the gifts I gave for Christmas last year were personalised: I got a really lovely silver lighter with Swarovski Crystals for my friend with her name engraved on it, my sister a case of personalised Rosé wine (I know, right!) and my niece a cute little baby blanket with her name and date of birth sewn into it.

So those are some of my favourite gifts bought online... hopefully I've given you a bit of inspiration!

I Love the Internet!
