Weight Loss Surgery – Is It For You?

By admin On July 29, 2010 Under child discipline

Weight loss surgery is in the news lately, and not for just overweight adults having a difficult time with losing weight--now it's being considered as an appropriate treatment for teenagers.  In this article, we'll review the conditions that determine whether it's the right treatment for anyone.

First, there's the time commitment of an exercise program.  As I'm confident you're aware, there are a wide range of weight loss programs and diets on the market to coach you on how to get a flat stomach fast, as well as various exercise programs to go along with them.  There are artificial solutions involving diet pills and such which help to increase your metabolism.  Something new hits the market practically every day.  To see results from any modern weight loss prorgram demands patience and discipline, and it is a bigger time commitment for those who have lots of weight to lose.  You may be a good candidate if you aren't able to commit to the amount of time necessary for more traditional methods.

To qualify for gastric and bypass surgeries, you have to be classified as "morbidly obese" -- at least 100 pounds overweight if male, and 80 pounds if female, and your body mass index must be 40 or over.  If you are significantly overweight, be aware that you're fighting a killer which can contribute to heart disease and to diabetes.  If other options aren't working for you, surgery is greatly preferable to living with the condition.

The surgery itself is able to help you with weight loss even when the less intrusive methods cannot, by limiting the amount you eat and limiting how much you can digest.  That said, you still have to go on an exercise and healthy diet plan after the surgery to keep the weight off.  Given that you get a head start with the surgery, that's often a successful endeavor.

Much like other surgeries, be aware that weight loss surgery is subject to complications and side effects.  Common side effects include hernias, infections and blood clotting.  Your first step, should you believe the benefits of weight loss surgery may outweigh the risks, is to consult a physician.  I'd also recommend you find other patients who've undergone the surgery, and discuss the side effects and problems they encountered.  This should be easy to do without any embarrassment by joining internet discussion forums and using a pen name.  Between your doctor's guidance to the likelihood of success of the procedure, and your learning about other people's experiences, you may be able to get a flat stomach fast even if you have a great deal of weight to lose!

Your longevity will thank you.
