Effectively Remove Wine Spills From Your Cars Upholstery

By admin On July 7, 2010 Under food and wine

Wine spills can leave a cars interior smelling strongly and red wine stains can look very unsightly on upholstery. Wine spills and stains can successfully be cleaned up and removed but it's important that the correct products and techniques are used in order for it to be completely removed and to prevent any undesirable odours from persisting.

The key to effectively removing wine and to eliminating the odour is to use a biological cleaning product which contains enzymes and active ingredients that effectively break down the spillage or stain at source.

The affected area should initially be pre treated with a biological cleaner and left to dwell for a few moments before being worked over with a damp micro fibre towel. The aim here is not to fully remove the wine but to treat it with the active ingredients to remove the source of any odours prior to the actual cleaning.

After the stain or spillage has been sufficiently pre treated with a biological cleaner it should then be thoroughly cleaned using either a designated upholstery cleaning product or a diluted all purpose cleaner. Ideally a wet vac extraction machine should be used to thoroughly and efficiently clean and extract the affected area simultaneously.

If the use of a wet vac extraction machine is not possible the area can still be successfully cleaned by hand but it may require a little more effort. The diluted all purpose cleaner or upholstery cleaner should be applied directly to the stain or spillage and worked in with a damp micro fibre towel. You should keep a bucket of clean warm water at hand to rinse out the towel as it becomes contaminated with the wine residue. An appropriate upholstery brush can be used to further agitate the area if necessary. The process should ideally be repeated to ensure all areas of the stain or spillage have been sufficiently cleaned.

After cleaning by hand you should use a vacuum cleaner to extract the area and remove as much of the remaining cleaning and wine residue as possible. Before vacuuming however, you should soak up any excess residue with a dry micro fibre towel to ensure the vacuum cleaner does not take in too much moisture.

During cleaning the doors should be opened to aerate the interior and help aid odour removal. It is advisable to keep them open for awhile longer even after cleaning also, to help the affected area dry out. An aerosol air freshening product should then be applied to the interior and the vehicle closed up.
