Deciding on Your Article Topic

Deciding on an article topic which is really going to capture the reader’s interest is no easy task, you have to really think what the readers want to read.

Here are various things to consider;

Knowledge
How much do you really know about the topic? Are you prepared to research and take notes for the article? If you can’t physically write about the subject, forget it!

What would you want to read an article based on?
For example, I’m 16 and write a lot of articles for teen websites, I know what teenagers want and need to know, so this is very advantageous to me. Write about something which interests you.

How and Why
How and Why articles are easily the most effective! - People want to know how to do something, if you’ve just invented a new yo-yo trick, post an article on how to do it. However, you must also post why as this is what will hook the reader into digesting the information you’re providing!

Continuous articles
If you’re interested in football, e.g. the UEFA Champion’s League - and you’ve seen an article based on what the UEFA Champion’s League is, write an article about past winners, statistics, interesting facts, famous moment and whatever else you can think of - this will give you a basis with which to work.

Will the topic stay in date?
It’s a great having an article on Baby P, two days after, but even if it gets 5000 views in the first 4 days, the visits will dry up simply because current event articles go out of date too easily.

Write a list of article subjects - google them!
Write yourself a nice little list of subjects you could write an article on and then google them all. If there’s plenty of results for that subject, then it’ll be hard to get your article noticed despite being fresh, unless it really is something special. If results for the subject are sparse, then write it up ASAP and be the first person to try the cake!
